Helping to secure the future for children with impairment

We partnered up with Mary Hare school for children with impairment to deliver a fun-packed Construction Careers Day event for students and teachers.

The day included inspirational talks about the variety of roles available, routes into construction, and real-life examples from our people.

Students also took part in activities throughout the day which included collaborating in groups to build a giant tetrahedron and then in the afternoon, they were tasked with building a bridge out of paper and clips which had to span over a given distance. In total 26 students took part with 1 additional student for part of the day. Students were able to use various skills such as communication, time management, organisation, working with numbers, problem-solving, and much more.

This is only the start of our ongoing collaboration with Mary Hare School and we will be going back to give the 6th form students Mock Interviews and provide information on CV writing early in the new year.

These initiatives all form part of our wider Now or Never, sustainability strategy and our overall purpose which is to deliver brilliant buildings, transform lives, strengthen communities, and enhance the environment so our world is fit for future generations.

The feedback received is fantastic…read what was said:

I only managed to see a bit of what you were delivering but that was superb, and I have heard nothing but positive comments. We are very lucky to have you working with us, thanks so much for giving up your time. Anne-Marie Martin, Head of Sixth Form

I just wanted to take the time to once again thank you for planning and delivering the activity day. I have spoken to our construction students and they all had really enjoyed the day especially building the tetrahedron and competing against each other with the bridge-building exercise. By sharing your career journeys you have really raised the profile of Willmott Dixon and the career opportunities within your company. We really do appreciate your continued support and everything you are doing to help inspire and encourage our students to pursue a career within the construction industry. James House, Head of Technical Services and Multi-trades

The event was hosted by our sector lead, Lucy Wiltshire, and colleagues at Willmott Dixon’s construction offices Ben Silsby and Eoin Burns.
