Project Story
Project Brief
We have been appointed by Horsham District Council to deliver the first major refurbishment of The Capitol theatre in more than two decades, enhancing the theatre and cinema experience at one of the district’s most cherished cultural venues.
Last refurbished in 2002, the project will deliver upgrades across the theatre, cinema screens, auditorium, toilets, bar areas and box office.
Procured via the SCAPE Construction Framework, the refurbishment is being carefully programmed to maintain the venue’s busy schedule. The Capitol is expected to re-open in late 2026.
Project Solution
The refurbishment focuses on refreshing key public areas to create a more attractive, welcoming and accessible space for audiences.
Seating will be upgraded, alongside new layouts that improve viewing positions for disabled visitors, enabling them to sit alongside friends and family.
Our scope includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing works to support the new design, as well as decorative improvements to front of house spaces and the building’s external façade.
The project also prioritises local employment and training opportunities, including work experience for students, and support for community groups through volunteering and donations.
Project Outcome
- A revitalised, first-class destination for theatre, film, family entertainment and live performance
- Improved accessibility and audience experience throughout the venue
- Support for environmental sustainability objectives
- Long-term social and economic value for the local community
- Building on Willmott Dixon Interiors’ track record in public sector and cultural refurbishment
