Glazed Atrium
Roof Installation
Creating spaces that perform, today and for the future
As glazed atrium roofs age, issues like overheating, water ingress, and reduced performance begin to affect the quality of your space and the experience of those who use it.
At Willmott Dixon Interiors, we work with building owners and occupiers to transform ageing atrium spaces into bright, efficient and compliant environments. Whether part of a wider refurbishment or a standalone upgrade, our approach is built around quality, certainty, and delivering spaces that support better outcomes for people and the planet.
Common challenges we address:

Persistent leaks and glazing failures

Uncomfortable internal temperatures due to solar gain

Acoustic issues impacting usability of space below

Outdated fire performance and non-compliant materials

Escalating maintenance and energy costs
Our solution
We take a collaborative, end-to-end approach from early contractor involvement and design development through to safe, high-quality delivery within live heritage environments.
Every intervention is carefully considered to enhance performance, reduce risk and improve long-term value.
The outcome
- Enhanced comfort and wellbeing through better ventilation, acoustic control and daylight management
- Improved energy efficiency and reduced operational costs

"I have found WDI to be professional and as determined to meet our goals and deadlines as we were. They had access to a skilled supply of contractors and professionals who were all informed, knowledgeable and capable of helping us achieve our aims. The space too was managed in a sympathetic manner, taking into account the Listed status of the buildings and the surrounding open galleries and busy visitor spaces (indoors and within our Grounds).
All in all, the team achieved the finish we were aiming for, within time and budget."

Project Brief
We were appointed to refurbish the central glazed roof of Ocean Court at the Grade I listed National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
The £12.3 million project, awarded via public-sector procurement specialist SCAPE, aimed to address long-standing water ingress, acoustic and solar heat gain issues, while improving comfort and energy performance across the space.
More than two decades after the original roof was installed, this upgrade has brought a fresh lease of life to the heart of one of London’s most-visited cultural attractions, delivering an improved visitor experience.
Project Solution
We installed more than 2,550 sq m of new solar-protective glazing and Barrisol membrane, significantly improving thermal and acoustic conditions within Ocean Court.
In parallel, we also delivered an upgrade to the existing building’s MEP systems, which included enhancements to the underfloor heating and cooling system, ventilation, lighting and electrical services – with care taken to protect the museum’s many precious collections.
All extracted glazing units were fully recycled in line with the project’s sustainability goals.
Project Outcome
- A brighter, more welcoming space at the heart of the museum
- Visitors now enjoy a more comfortable experience, with improved acoustics and climate control
- Delivery of MEP upgrades without altering the building’s historic structure
- Over 200 people supported through community initiatives including school and university engagement, work placements, and careers guidance
- A social return on investment of more than £900,000
