The British Safety Council (BSC) held its 60th Anniversary and International Safety Awards Gala Dinner on Friday 5th May at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane.
This was a prestigious event to celebrate and recognise the commitment of over 500 organisation members who achieved the International Safety Award this year.
This event sees organisations from across the globe, and in all industries, making a commitment to keeping their workplaces and employees healthy and safe.
Willmott Dixon Interiors won an International Safety Award for demonstrating a strong commitment to good health & safety management during 2016.
The awards also recognise those individuals who have been exemplars in their approach to keeping work colleagues and members of the public safe from harm.
One award was for the ‘Young Health and Safety Champion’ where the British Safety Council recognises individuals who have been influential exemplars in their approach to keeping work colleagues and members of the public safe from harm.
Tom Arkley of Willmott Dixon Interiors was one of over 140 nominees to be short listed for the award and on the night won the ‘Highly Commended award’ and runner up for this category for his work with young unemployed people to gain an entry level H&S qualification.
Tom is currently in his final year of a four year Management Trainee programme, completing his training in September.
Tom has been a driving force behind the company’s partnership with ‘Construction Youth Trust’ and their ‘Changing Lives Programme’ training unemployed young people about working safely on site.
These regular sessions assist the young workers to gain a real understanding of what it is like to work in our industry whilst also gaining a Health & Safety based qualification and also receiving a varied trade work experience.
Tom has also organised site visits for schools, charities and university students. He is a great role model for those wanting to get into a construction role, either as an operative or in a junior management position.
“This is truly a world class effort. Congratulations to Tom and WDI for supporting him with this award.” – Mark French, Group Head of Health, Safety and Environment.
