Case Studies
Willmott Dixon’s £132m refurbishment of the Bristol Beacon has created one of the most iconic cultural landmarks in the South-West of England, with the aim to become the UK’s first carbon neutral venue by 2030.
The Beacon, completed in November 2023, boasts four new world-class performance spaces set to host over 800 events and generate an estimated £13 million annually. From the early stages of construction, the project embraced a community-funded approach to achieve net zero with Willmott Dixon bringing in the Bristol Energy Cooperative (BEC) to maximise renewable energy generation on the building.
TBC.London is one of London’s first net zero carbon workspaces, achieving the highest levels of building performance by eliminating carbon from its construction and operation.
Driven by the developer FORE’s commitment to retrofit, TBC.London is anticipated to use 6,365 fewer tons of CO2 compared to a new build, equivalent to 32 years of operational energy after completion in 2024.
Designed by architects Stiff + Trevillion, and ECE, the building’s energy performance is forecast to shift from EPC D to A rating and is on course to achieve BREEAM Outstanding certification, placing TBC.London among the top 2% of BREEAM certified buildings in the world.
Hackbridge Primary School named winner in the non-domestic category at the UK Passivhaus Awards 2023.
The UK’s first Passivhaus Plus school – built by Willmott Dixon for the London Borough of Sutton – has won an industry award for setting the standard for zero carbon educational buildings.
Hackbridge Primary School, completed in 2019, won at the presitigious awards, which are hosted by the UK Passivhaus Trust and recognise buildings that meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability .
Designed by specialist architects, Architype, the zero-carbon school has proven itself highly efficient, generating its own renewable energy, and providing a beautifully comfortable space to nurture inquisitive minds. By integrating Passivhaus principles of airtightness and insulation with additional renewable technologies, the school surpasses RIBA’s 2030 operational energy targets, generating more energy than the building consumes throughout the year.
