We are proud to be working in partnership with the London Borough of Waltham Forest to deliver the refurbishment of Walthamstow’s Grade II* listed former EMD Cinema into a multi-purpose entertainment venue and cultural hub – Soho Theatre Walthamstow. This project was procured via the Procurement Hub framework.
Work continues apace on this famous historic building and the below video provides a sneak peek into the work that has been undertaken on the historic features. This includes the ceiling and heritage arches originally designed by Architect Cecil Masey that have been fully restored.
With nearly 100 years of history etched into the walls, floors and ceilings, from the outset, a unanimous decision was made to retain this fascinating glimpse into the past. Due to the dereliction of nearly 20 years, modern-day preservation techniques were needed to stop the building deteriorating further. However, to retain the original architecture, where possible the interior has been left as found whilst work has been undertaken to stop any further decay. Due to this preservation method, audiences and visitors to Soho Theatre Walthamstow will be able to see evidence of the architectural and design choices from the 1930s, 1960s and the 1990s.
