WDI Enhancing Lives is a new incentive created by the trainees of Willmott Dixon Interiors. The aim of this programme is to change the lives of people in the community. This year we have teamed up with Age UK and Thames Reach.

Through this project our trainees will be refurbishing Age UK’s healthy living centre based in Southwark. The main use for the building is to provide a social hub, focusing on loneliness and isolation within the elderly. The current condition of the building is restricting their ability to operate efficiently but also restricting the amount of impact they can have on the local community. The refurbishment will help tackle these challenges as well as provide the users with a facility far better equipped for the demands they face on a daily basis.

We will also be working in partnership with Thames Reach to support their training programme which teaches women from challenging backgrounds how to paint and decorate. Candidates will be given various training prior to the project starting, building their skillset and CV. The refurbishment of Age Uk’s healthy living centre will be used as a vehicle to provide on-the-job training, networking opportunities and develop experience for participants who graduate the course. The objective of this is to achieve employment, apprenticeships and further opportunities for 100% of participants of the program.

Key Facts

  • 31% of older people have experienced loneliness
  • 17% of older people were found socially isolated
  • Women make up only 11% of the construction workforce andjust 1% of the workers on site
  • Men outnumber women 56 to one in construction
