WDI appointed to improve student facilities at London Metropolitan University

Providing world class facilities to ensure students receive the education for which they are paying is at the top of the agenda in the Higher Education sector. Universities are becoming more aware of this and are responding to this change in the market by offering improved facilities in which to stay, study, research and learn.

The London Metropolitan University (LMU) is no exception to this and Willmott Dixon Interiors (WDI) is delighted to be on site at Calcutta House refurbishing five floors which contain teaching space and a library. All areas of the building will remain live and in constant use during the refurbishment. This is a busy university and the students don’t expect disruption during their studies and research time. WDI have been in similar situations before – most recently having refurbished the upper floors at the Imperial College of London’s library while the lower floors remained in occupation.

‘Waiting until the summer break’ is no longer a quieter time on campus with many universities offering summer courses and ensuring their research facilities and libraries remain open 24/7. This means working on live sites and containing noise, dust and vibrations remains critical to high quality delivery. WDI understands these issues that the LMU need us to address for the benefit of the students, faculty staff and the myriad of stakeholders. In fact, the commercial refurbishment experience at WDI has relied on us understanding and mitigating these issues in a commercial environment and given that 69% of WDI’s projects are completed while in occupation, we are well placed to run this project with the consideration of the occupants and the safety of all at the forefront of our minds.

The refurbishment at Calcutta House represents the beginning of a longer term strategy for the LMU to consolidate and to make the most of their built environment. The “Transformation of lives” is a key philosophy of the LMU and is also at the heart of Willmott Dixon’s Community Investment scheme. We will work together on this joint perspective and look forward to the successful delivery of this project.
