Willmott Dixon Interiors were awarded a £4.5 million contract with Coventry University to refurbish the university’s London campus in Dagenham. The project will see Willmott Dixon Interiors transform the current Civic Centre into a cutting-edge learning environment for students undertaking a range of full and part-time courses.
The project team has set the bars high by undertaking sustainable activities that contribute to the society as a whole. Some of these initiatives are highlighted below.
The Green Machine
Here at Coventry University London (CU London) the team are taking being GREEN to the next level by adding a splash of colour to the site compound whilst at the same time encouraging wildlife, such as Bee’s, Butterflies and a variety of other insects.
We have also engaged with a number of local school children to visit the site for a morning of planting seeds and flowers.
All plants and bulbs have been locally source from Romford Garden Centre with a quantity them being collected today by Construction Manager Mark and Build Manager Dave.
Reducing Waste through Recycling and Regeneration
As part of the green initiative, we have built a number of planters around the site compound from recycled wood, pallets and hoarding which we had installed at CU London. This has helped us produce a great end product out of waste materials that would generally be thrown away.

Another idea for recycling at CU London is the use of timber Pallet left overs to create stands for our skip signage. It’s simple but very effective as they are light weight and extremely mobile and again, using materials that would end up in the skip at the end of the day.
Helping Young People Get into Construction
The team are also engaging with the wider community to offer a variety of exciting training and employability opportunities. We are currently recruiting local residents for apprenticeship and work experience opportunities, to help more people to get into construction.

CU London will also participate in this year’s Open Doors event being held in March 2017. The event will allow the local community and young people who wish to get into construction a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of the live site, discover diverse skills and professions required for the construction industry as well as find out more about work experience opportunities.
